Dedicated to railway sound

71000 in Newtondale Railwaysounds is a home for recordings, mostly from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Many are of steam locos but historic diesels are featured.

The recordings were made in two time periods - in the mid 1980s on the NYMR, and from 2004 onwards on the NYMR and other lines. 'Vintage' recordings from the NYMR have their own page featuring several locos not present on the line today, or no longer in operation.

Latest addition: 60163 on Sapperton Bank with The Thames Tornado, 1Z28, Gloucester to London Victoria 7th November 2009.
Not my usual sort of thing, mainline. Too much driving, too much time and all for a relatively small reward. But as it was running past the front door, it would have been rude not to...
60163 approaches from the right from St Mary's Crossing, Chalford, whistling as it passes. The final whistle in the left distance marks the entry to Sapperton Tunnel.
Not the world's greatest recording, put it passed a pleasant hour on a sunny Saturday morning.

Latest latest additions: NYMR Autumn Steam Gala 2009, Friday 2nd October to Monday 5th October

So how did it get this late in the year? Did I blink? Have I had a prolonged senior moment?
It hardly seemed possible that I was back for another Autumn Gala so soon after chasing Tornado in the Spring. This time the star of the show was a rather darker shade of green in the form of Oliver Cromwell, which I last heard at the Worth Valley in February and before that at Ais Gill in 1968.

As you can read on steamsounds', Friday was a superb recording day. If my only recording had been the first cut of 'Cromwell' on the bank below Darnholm I'd have gone home happy, but the rest of the day was just as good.

Just a reminder - please don't forget the 'Bridge & Wheels Appeal' on the NYMR website. The last trains ran over Bridge 30 last weekend and it won't be long before the big lift gets underway.
AH, 8th November 2009.
The recordings can be played from the browser window or downloaded. Many of the recordings begin and end with a train in the distance, so the tracks may seem inaudible at start and end if you play them only through PC speakers. The best listening is with headphones, but be careful not to damage your hearing - passing locos can be very loud.

Special thanks to Steve Dorrington for hosting this website.

All recordings on this site were made by the site owner. Recordings have been encoded in mp3 format at bit rates up to 160kBytes/sec and shortened to make them quicker to stream/download. Lower bit rates don't give a good result. File sizes can be more than 5MBytes, but even so the quality has suffered a bit in the process. That's life.

If you have a sound plug-in installed (eg Quicktime), Right click, then 'Open' to play a file. You may be prompted by your browser to 'Allow Active X content'. To download the sound files, right click, then 'Save Target As'.
