Mainline and other recordings

Only a few at the moment, but maybe more will follow.

60163 on Sapperton Bank with The Thames Tornado Railtour, 1Z28, Gloucester to London Victoria 7th November 2009.
60163 approaches from the right from St Mary's Crossing, Chalford, whistling as it passes. The final whistle in the left distance marks the entry to Sapperton Tunnel. 1:23. 1.6MB

The Great Western Incursion Railtour, 1Z43 charging through the Chalford Valley towards Frampton Mansell, on Sapperton Bank, on Saturday 20th February 2010. Tyseley to Didcot outbound behind GWR Hall Class 4-6-0 No 4965 Rood Ashton Hall + GWR Castle Class 4-6-0 No 5043 Earl of Mount Edgecumbe. 1:18, 1.5MB
In the late afternoon, the return journey from Didcot back to Tyseley approaches Sapperton Tunnel from Kemble. A glider tug from the nearby Kemble Airfield flies overhead as the train approaches. 0:32, 0.6MB

The Midland Tornado Railtour, 1Z71, on the Lickey Incline, with BR Standard Class 8P 2-6-4 71000 'Duke of Gloucester' standing in for 60163 between Gloucester and London Waterloo. The whistle sounds on the ascent from Bromsgrove and again opposite the recording position about halfway up the incline. 71000 sounds to be assisted by the Class 66 diesel hanging on the back. A multiple unit descends the bank from Barnt Green as the sound of 71000 fades into the background.

Cauldon Low Branch re-opening 13th November 2010

Mainline? Well it will be when Moorland & City run freight back to Stoke on Trent. In the meantime, the re-opening makes the Cauldon Low branch part of the Churnet Valley Railway. The line runs north then west from Cheddleton, just south of Leek, over the Staffordshire Moorlands to the quarry at Cauldon Low, near Waterhouses, in the south of the Peak District.
Crew training runs have been underway for some weeks, but the first public trains were run on Saturday 13th November. The weather was dry and sunny, but with a cold gusty wind from the south.
The first working of the day was reserved for staff and volunteers and ran before the first advertised public working. Unfortunately the staff special ran about 50 minutes late, throwing the timetable out for the rest of the day.

71000 'Duke of Gloucester' with Stanier 8F (4)8624 banking with the 09:50 from Froghall/10:10 from Cheddleton on the incline between Leekbrook junction and Bradnop. The Stanier 8F 2-8-0 can be heard working in the distance; one loco (probably 71000) blows off. 71000 whistles as it approaches a footpath crossing. The safety valves eventually re-seat and both locos can be heard working as they pass the recording position. 3:34, 4.1MB

44767 'George Stephenson' with 34028 'Eddystone' banking, on the late-running 11:25 from Froghall. 44767 could be heard re-starting away from Cheddleton, with the sound fading in and out as the line winds around the hills to the north of Leekbrook.
The track starts as train reaches the straight section of line running northwest towards Bradnop on a 1 in 45 gradient. The exhaust events of the unique Stephenson valve gear on 44767 are delightfully crisp and dominate the sound until it passes the recording position. The softer beat of 34028 then becomes audible as the train climbs away. 2:51, 3.3MB

(4)8624 with Class 33 33021 banking. This was the (nominal) 14:45 from Froghall, and was the second train of the day to have 33021 banking. On this turn, the diesel at the back lets the 8F at the front do most of the work. 2:16, 2.6MB
