Tanfield Railway
A superbly historic railway, full of industrial interest, from where coal roads ran
down to the Tyne at Dunstan and Jarrow. Dating from 1725 the railway has, at
Marley Hill, the oldest working engine shed in Europe.
Causey Arch, just down the line from Andrews House station, is the worlds oldest
surviving railway bridge.
A visit to Tanfield is a 'must'.

In the early afternoon, diesel electric shunter D22 ran into
the platform at Andrews House from Marley Hill shed. D22 was built by
Armstrong Whitworth in 1933, shortly after the firm obtained a licence to build
locos using Sulzer engines. D22 is an early example of modern diesel-electric
traction as we know it today.
