West Somerset Railway
Spring Gala 8th March 2008
Recordings centre around Crowcombe Heathfield station. This is the summit of the
line with 1 in 100 gradients either side of the station. The station is a quiet
gem and does very nice tea and cakes.
GWR 2-8-0T
5224 takes the 09:20 departure from Bishops Lydeard towards Nornvis Bridge,
just south of Crowcombe Heathfield station. 1:26, 1.7MB
50 minutes later, and from a recording position on the other side of the line,
GWR 56xx Class 0-6-2T
No 5619 crosses Nornvis Bridge before entering the deep
cutting south of Crowcombe Heathfield. 10:10 departure from Bishops Lydeard.
2:05, 2.4MB
From the roadside north of the station, GWR '2884' Class
No 3802 approaches from Stogumber
with the 10:10 departure from Minehead. 1:06, 1.3MB
Further out in the countryside, along a footpath leading to Roebuck Farm,
the line winds along the hillside on the rising gradient. GWR 2-6-2Ts
4160 and 5542 double head the 11:00
limited stop service from Minehead. Unfortunately the locos shut off just
before passing the recording positon. 1:24. 1.6MB.
5619 Takes the 12:40 service from
Minehead non-stop through Stogumber station. The short stretch of 1 in 68 gradient south of the
station dictates the opening of the regulator as the train climbs away.
1:05, 1.3MB
Visiting Black 5 45110 arrives at
Stogumber in very windy conditions with the 1:30 from Minehead, then departs
shortly after. 2:37, 3.0MB.
Arrival and Departure from Crowcombe Heathfield.
Visiting LNWR G2 'Super D' 49395 pulls
into the station with the 4:50 from Bishops Lydeard and halts immediately
in front of the recording position. Skill in selecting a position, or just luck?
1:03, 1.3MB.
Shortly afterwards, 4160 arrives with
the 4:00 from Minehead. 49395 sizzles in the background. 4160 whstles and
then leaves for Bishops Lydeard. A signal goes on and points are
reversed before 49395 restarts on its way to Minehead. 2:47, 3.2MB.
